FACILITIES & SERVICES

Students enter Hedland Senior High School and join a Learning Team. Each Learning Team aims to provide a positive and productive learning environment. This innovative concept, which began in 1999 has been adjusted and improved on since that time.

Learning Team Program Coordinators work with key teaching staff and identified Student Services personnel to provide a strong support structure for all students.

Hedland SHS's Middle School was developed to assist primary students make a smooth transition into secondary schooling. As the Learning Teams have developed the focus has expanded to assist students in the transition to our Senior School as they move into Year 10 and beyond.

Learning Teams in Year 8 and 9 work to ensure a student's social, emotional and education needs are met. By 2008 Hedland Senior High School will also cater for Year 7 students.

The Senior School caters for Year 10 -12 students in an adult learning environment established on the main school site at Hardie House for Tertiary bound students and at Pilbara TAFE for Vocational Education & Training students.

Learning Team teachers aim to know their students very well and support their development through the school. A student's learning program is developed based on their ability and moving the student forward at their own learning pace.

A Level 4 Deputy Principal, two Level 3 Program Coordinator a dedicated Homeroom Teacher and subject teachers work together as a team to look after each student's well-being and educational needs.

Hedland SHS's focus on the student as a whole person has been critical in the success experienced by individual students.

The Learning Team encourages a combined, holistic and cross-curricula approach between the English, Society & Environment, Mathematics and Science Learning Areas. The focus is on early identification and intervention relating to all aspects of the child's education.

Health & Physical Education, Technology & Enterprise and The Arts Learning Areas are delivered outside of the Learning Team in specialist areas.

Under the Positive School Culture Program there is a strong emphasis on student attendance, achievement and accountability. The Learning Team Program Coordinator works closely with other Curriculum Leaders and the student's Homeroom Teacher to ensure that each student is being well catered for.

All school and Education Department based policies are embedded in the Learning Team approach. This ensures that students are provided with the opportunity to achieve their potential on a day to day basis. Hence, the progress and well being of the students is monitored and recorded in the every day activities they undertake.

Students are levelled according to the Student Outcome Statements and a formal report is provided at the end of each semester. Teachers make regular contact with parents through the use of Homework Diaries, telephone, parent/teacher interviews and email.
